The secret to making your desires, ambitions or dreams of living a healthier life, your reality, is self-discipline. Most of us want to feel vibrant fit and healthy, but in a moment of weakness when you “can’t be bothered” cooking a healthy meal, what’s stopping you ordering a pizza? If you don’t practise discipline when it comes to food, movement sleep and self-care, you simply won’t achieve your goals.
The good news is, it’s a learned behaviour, which means we can practise self-control and get really good at it! Before my wedding, I was extremely disciplined steering clear of preservatives and any added extras to feel my best inside and out. People would say to me. “At least you can relax after the wedding”, but I did the opposite. My discipline muscle was stronger than ever and it was simply second nature to choose clean, whole foods. I was feeling like my best, happiest self and there was no way I was going to give that up…which is something science supports. According to a 2013 study by Wilhelm Hoffman, people with high self control are happier in the long and short term.
Having self-discipline does not mean striving for perfection because indulgence and flexibility are part of a balanced life. I live by the 80/20 rule.
Detox your kitchen by throwing away temptations
Plan ahead so you’re not dictated by impulses and chance.
Use non-food rewards treating yourself to a massage or taking a long bath with essential oils.
Document your progress by making a public declaration of your goals and taking photos or keeping a food diary to stay accountable.
Let it out: Write down your desires in detail.
Forgive yourself for slip-ups. It’s what you do most of the time that matters.
And repeat until behaviours become healthy habits.
