Do you find yourself craving certain foods or tastes?
If we dig deeper, cravings are about much more than the food on our plates.
Often, what you’re really craving is the ‘food’ which fills the gap not in your tummy, but in your heart. It’s called ‘Primary Food.’
Unfortunately, no matter how many green smoothies you gulp down or how many spin classes you churn out, if you’re not getting enough of the really good stuff- your primary food, you just won’t feel whole, well, happy or healthy.
So what exactly is primary food and how does it fill you up?
Primary food is your lifestyle and how these four delicious elements play a part:
Marriage, partnerships, friendships. Are your relationships healthy and loving or do you feel isolated?
Do you move your body in a way which feels good to you often?
Is your work satisfying? Do you feel like you’re doing what your ‘meant’ to be doing?
Do you have a spiritual practice which makes sense to you and helps you stay on track with your values?
*If you feel strong in these areas most of the time, all of those green smoothies will just add to your wellness… those amazing good habits you’ve developed won’t be all in vain!
So checking in with yourself, here’s when primary food is working for you:
Think back to when you were a little kid and you could play for hours with your friends and forget about eating. Or when you’re really involved in work which satisfies you and you have a sense of flow. For me it’s sometimes when I’m writing a news story or a blog post. You forget about time. You forget about eating. Your already ‘filled up’.
Or lets flip it:
Think back to a time you stuffed up at work. Aghhh, you feel horrible, your chest is tight and you feel kinda sick in the tummy. You get home, bust through your door and reach for the wine and chocolate cake to ‘fix’ it. Trouble is food won’t really help you. You’ll just feel more yuck after downing a bottle of wine!
If we have primary food in out lives these moments are more manageable- we can come home and hug our partner, call a friend who cares about us, run it out in nature or sit down and meditate….
Then maybe we can flop on the couch and really enjoy and savour that glass of red.
I hope your tummies and hearts are filled to the brim… and if you have any cravings that you satisfy them which what your mind and body really needs.
